Ron Smith (ice hockey)

Ronald Robert Smith (born November 19, 1952 in Port Hope, Ontario) is a retired Canadian ice hockey defenceman and politician.

Career

From 1969 to 1970, Smith played for St. Catharines Black Hawks. He played for the Sorel Black Hawks the following season, the Cornwall Royals from 1971 to 1972, and the New Haven Nighthawks from 1972 to 1973.

Smith was selected by the New York Islanders round 4 #49 overall in the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft. He played 11 NHL games for the Islanders. Later, Smith played for the Fort Worth Wings, the Fort Worth Texans, Bodens BK and the Erie Blades. He retired from play in 1977.

Later, Smith was elected and became the mayor of Port Hope, Ontario from 1994 to 2000.
